How to Use Image to ASCII Art
- Upload an image โ click the drop box, drag a file in, or paste with Ctrl/โ+V.
- Set the width โ measured in characters. Higher values keep more detail but produce wider output.
- Choose a character set โ Classic, Dense, Sparse, or your own Custom ramp (darkest character first).
- Tweak the look โ invert tones for light-on-dark themes, enable color mode to tint each character, or change the background.
- Copy text to the clipboard or Download .txt for a plain-text file.
Choosing a character set
Classic (10 symbols) is the recognizable default and reads well at small sizes. Dense uses ~70 symbols for smooth gradients and fine detail. Sparse uses only a handful of symbols for a chunky, low-resolution look. With Custom you can paste your own ramp โ order characters from darkest to lightest, because each is mapped to a brightness band of the source image.
